The Pea Garden

She fell asleep beside the white pea flowers.

Her fingers tightened around the green stems.

They snapped in her palm, easily

Lost in the leaf-splattered graveyard.

She fell asleep beside the broken pea spines.

Her hair twisted, mimicking the roots.

They sucked tears from the dirt, quickly

Disappearing into green-splotched pods.

She fell asleep beside the wilting pea plants.

Her body greyed, then browned too.

The plants bowed, then kneeled, regrettably

Dead in the green and red garden.
